Romania has the largest national QKD network in Europe
The Romanian National Quantum Communication Infrastructure (RoNaQCI) is the largest QKD network in Europe with over 1,500 kilometers across 36 quantum-safe links between 6 metropolises (Bucharest, Iasi, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Craiova and Constanta). RoNaQCI is an integral part of the European EuroQCI initiative, which enables its members to design and build national quantum communication networks. The Romanian QKD network now corresponds to about 20% of the total terrestrial QKD infrastructure of Europe as a whole. The network was created by QKD equipment manufacturer IDQ (now part of IONQ) together with the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest and the national research & education network RoEduNet.
The network enables secure communication between various institutions, such as universities, research institutions and data centers, but also public bodies, as well as a clinic.
The transport of the finished QKD keys takes place in coexistence with the rest of the data traffic via wavelength division multiplexing in the C-band.
The project will also develop software packages to monitor parameters of the function, performance and use of the QKD network. Other software is intended to enable the signing of X.509 security certificates with quantum-generated random numbers. In addition, a hybrid combination of QKD and PQC is to be supported i.a. for VPN tunnels, as well as via SSH throughout the network.
